I ventured over to Cambridge to see The Hush Sound perform at TT the Bear’s. The venue was intimate and welcoming, which was reminiscent of my favorite concert venue back at home (The Chance in Poughkeepsie, New York). Smaller venues are always better because they allow for more crowd interaction and the obvious- you get to be closer to the band you’re seeing perform.
Destry and Tommy & The High Pilots both opened up for The Hush Sound. I’ll be honest here and say I had never heard of either of them prior to this concert, but I was pleasantly surprised to watch them both put on great performances. I’ve had so many experiences with bad openers that this was refreshing. Destry was this adorable indie folk band with sickeningly sweet music that just made you want to smile and drink tea in a cozy blanket. In contrast, Tommy and The High Pilots was much more upbeat and energetic. Their frontrunner, Tommy Cantillon, had a fantastic stage presence. Tommy and his band were constantly jumping around and dancing and really got the crowd going.
Destry and Tommy & The High Pilots were both very enjoyable openers. I never found myself anxiously checking the time to estimate how much more I had to sit through, so that’s always a good sign.
When The Hush Sound went on, it was a dream come true for me. Back in middle school, The Hush Sound was my favorite band (and to this day, they are still in my top five), so to finally be able to see them in concert was unreal. Greta and Bob were sweet and told corny jokes, and the setlist was wonderful. They played a lot of music off of their last album, Goodbye Blues, a few songs off of Like Vines, and one song from their first album, So Sudden. I was really pleased overall with the set list, but I was hoping they’d play “City Traffic Puzzle” or “Where We Went Wrong” as well. The crowd, myself included, was really enamored with them, and were constantly belting out their lyrics. They sounded just as good, if not better, live and their versatility impresses me so much; every band member can play multiple instruments and they all are talented singers.
The Hush Sound came off their “indefinite hiatus” for this tour, and they played a new song at this show, so hopefully this is a sign that we’ll see more music from them future. C’mon… make it happen, Hush Sound. And while you’re at it, can you bring back Fall Out Boy too?
