Grouplove & Young the Giant at the House of Blues (3/8)

Thursday was a beautiful day in Boston, and a great show that night at the House of Blues kept that feeling going. I wished the roof could have opened up so we could see the stars instead of the disco ball above Grouplove and Young the Giant while they performed. There were only two acts and the show sold out months in advance. The crowd seemed to be just as excited to see Grouplove as they were to see Young the Giant, so it made for a continuously energized show. The weather complimented Grouplove’s aesthetic. They looked like they belonged… click headline to Read More

Bombay Bicycle Club, The Darcys, & Lucy Rose (3/9)

After waiting outside of the Middle East in Cambridge for a half hour after doors were to open for the Bombay Bicycle Club concert on Friday, I was surprised to notice that not too many people had arrived in time for the first opener, Lucy Rose.  Now I know that timeliness is not a primary quality of the general college age concert-goer, however, I happened to know that Lucy Rose is an exceptionally talented acoustic artist who also provides harmonies and back-up vocals for the headlining band, and assumed everyone else was aware of her greatness.  Once she began her… click headline to Read More

Sleeping with Sirens at Middle East Downstairs Energizes

Usually, Monday nights are depressing because it means the weekend is officially over. But teenagers swarmed the Middle East in Cambridge this past Monday night, psyched to see Sleeping with Sirens on tour with Secrets and Abandon All Ships.  The show was sold out and the downstairs pit was packed with kids who probably should have been doing homework, but when the bands took the stage, everything else was forgotten. Sideshow, a band from Rhode Island, opened the show with progressive melodies and guitar riffs. This band formed when the members were in high school and they’ve come a long… click headline to Read More

Fanfarlo Review

We’ve all done it; you say something you won’t expect to be a big deal or matter and then 10 minutes later it comes back to bite you in the ass. On March 5th I went to the Brighton Music Hall in Allston to see the British band Fanfarlo. They had been in Boston in early October, but I missed them then and had been determined to go this time. My friend and I arrived relatively early to get decent seats and check out the merchandise. We walked up to Fanfarlo’s table and my friend found a shirt she liked… click headline to Read More

Punch Brothers Review

Bringing banjo and mandolin back into the forefront of the wonderful world of music, PunchBrothers played a sold-out show at the Somerville Theater on Friday that transported me back into myhomeland of North Carolina. The hand-clapping and foot stomping was led by Chris Thile on mandolin.Thile is accompanied by Noam Pickelny on banjo, Chris Eldridge on guitar, Paul Kowert on bass, andGabe Witcher on violin or fiddle, whichever you prefer. Aoife O’Donovan, a native of Massachusetts, opened the show with an acoustic set that was a mix between Ingrid Michaelson and The Wreckers.Surprisingly, she had a slight country-twang to accompany her… click headline to Read More

Overjoyed to see Julia Nunes at T.T. the Bears on Leap Day

Leap Day happens only once every four years, so being able to see an act like Julia Nunes at TT the Bears in Cambridge on a night like that is rather special. If you haven’t heard of Julia Nunes, then you obviously haven’t explored the depths of YouTube well enough. She created her channel (youtube.com/jaaaaaaa) in 2006, and has gained over 207,000 subscribers over that time due to her hilarious personality and her seriously beautiful original and cover songs. She started filming herself playing songs in her college dorm room, and since then, she has toured with Ben Kweller, Ben… click headline to Read More

Jessie Baylin and opener The Watson Twins enchant at T.T. the Bear’s (2/28)

It’s not news that there’s a lot of pressure that comes with being a full-time student. The strain of midterm week, a part-time job, and trying to be involved on campus can make a trip across the river to Cambridge seem like a trip around the world. Except when there’s music involved. Last night, I had the pleasure of seeing both The Watson Twins and Jessie Baylin in Cambridge at T.T. the Bear’s on February 28th. The venue is pocket-sized and cozy, much like its Central Square locale, and so it should come as no surprise that the rest of… click headline to Read More

Paper Thick Walls at the Lizard Lounge (2/16)

Folk music has taken many shapes in the past few years. We’ve felt theman-made energy in sets from the Avett Brothers, and on the other end, theserene harmonies in ballads from the Head and the Heart. It has become a moredimensional genre as artists have strived to whisk some energy into unpluggedsets. That’s where Chicago’s Paper Thick Walls seem to gain the advantage. Threepieces and a lack of over-amplification, you might expect café material, but the triomanaged to embrace a dynamic that found a comfortable home in a liquored up Cambridge setting.
