Kygo at The Sinclair

The master of summer vibes and Hawaiian shirts

Tickets for Kygo at the Sinclair sold out on the first day. That’s when I realized this concert was something I needed to be part of.

22-year-old Norwegian DJ and music producer, Kygo, has barely been producing for one year now, but has already catapulted himself into the big league of electronic music. This past summer, he performed in festivals such as the infamous Tomorrowland in Belgium and America’s Tomorrowworld in Atlanta, where he filled in for the legendary Avicii.

ITunes categorizes his music as dance, but I find the term, tropical-house, used by his fans more appropriate. One of the songs that aided his popularity is his unique remix of Marvin Gaye’s Sexual Healing, a song that would make anyone want to visit the doctor.

The name of his tour is “Endless Summer” and on October 15th, I truly felt the Boston summer. Upon my arrival at the Sinclair I noticed that about three quarters of the concertgoers were wearing beachwear, which included Bermuda shorts, Hawaiian shirts and brightly colored dresses. It seems that beachwear is the proper attire for listing to Kygo music. A couple others including me had not received the memo.

From the minute the starting act, Australian DJ and producer, Thomas Jack entered the stage, the crowd lit, and the energy in the venue only increased as the night went on. Thomas Jack is most know for his remix of “Little Talks” by Of Monsters and Men, and his creative original mix “Final Speech”, which incorporates Charlie Chaplin’s, “The Great Dictator’s Speech”. By the end of his set people cheered for an encore. I believe that if Thomas Jack headlined a show, the venue would have been just as packed with screaming fans.

Once Kygo opened with his hit remix of Ed Sheeran’s “I See Fire”, the whole venue went nuts. He had transformed the Sinclair into a beach party in Myconos. For the duration of the concert I had to ward off Hawaiian shirted college boys in order to keep my place in the front. We all wanted to get a little closer to the master of tropical house. One fan even got a little too close by climbing on to the stage, only to be thrown into the crowd by security seconds later. That night, Kygo’s music truly captivated the whole venue, looking around there wasn’t single soul who wasn’t moving to his beats.

Kygo’s unique sounds have spread around the world like wild fire. I definitely recommend you see him in concert if you have the chance, but look out for his tour dates because his tickets sell fast! This 22-year-old is pioneering a new form of house music and this generation can’t get enough of it.

In the mean time, check out Kygo and Thomas Jack’s music. Free downloads are available on Facebook and Soundcloud.
